Professional CV:
- Manuel Alves was born in Montalegre.
- In 1976 opens his first menswear shop in Oporto.
- José Manuel Gonçalves is from Abrantes,
- Their partnership dates from 1984, with the opening of two stores in Bairro Alto (Lisbon).
- In 1985 they had their first public presentation in the Correio Velho Palace, since then they have been showing regularly their collections, including those showed within Moda Lisboa.
- Besides their own collections they have also collaborated with the industry between 1989 and 1992, having helped developing several brands for both national and international markets.
- Has invited guests of ICEP in 1993/94 and 1995 they were present in the Gaudi Salon in Barcelona, here they showed in runway collections for the international market. * They have been also in SEHM and IGEDO. Within these outline they were invited for actions of publicity for Portuguese Fashion in London, Copenhagen and Washington.
- In 1994 are invited to the Portuguese exhibition within Europalia 94 in Brussels.
- Present in the Portuguese Design Exhibit “Lisbon 94”, Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisbon).
- In 1997 created the costumes for several theatrical plays, namely The Giants of the Montain” by Pirandelo, directed by Giorgio Corsetti, opening in “Teatro Nacional de São João“ in Oporto, also the show “Rural Roots, Urban Passions” directed by Ricardo Pais for the “Cité de la Musique” in Paris and the “Teatro Nacional de São João“.
- They are invited teachers in “Faculdade de Arquitectura de Lisboa” since 1991.
- In 1997 here given the second prize in the contest for designing the uniforms for EXPO 98.
- Trough their career, innovation, quality, rigor and wit have been a constant elements of their lexicon of style, managing to capture clients from most relevant sectors of the country’s social and artistic life.
- In the 26 of October of 1997 with the presentation of the Autumn/Winter 97-98 collection they’ve opened their Atelier, dedicated exclusively to the design of women’s luxury ready to wear.
More recently:
- 1998 – They were distinguished with the award Look Elite for Best 1997 Collection and were nominated for the “Nova Gente” Award for Best fashion Designer of 1997.
- In April inauguration of a store in the Dom Pedro Amoreiras Hotel, carrying their womenswear collection.
- Designed and produce the new Telecel uniforms for Autumn/Winter and Spring/Summer.
- Designed the costumes for the João Botelho’s film “Tráfico” .
- 1999 – Won the “Globos de Ouro” Fashion Personality of 1998 and were nominated for the “Nova Gente” 1998 Best Fashion Designer.
- As special guests within the Contemporary Fashion Trends showed their work on the second ”Encontro Têxtil Portugal/Espanha”, that occur in September of this year in Covilhã (Portugal).
- Within the Ponti Festival that took place in the “Teatro Nacional de São João“, designed the costumes for the Paulo Ribeiro Dance Company in a show with music by Mário Laginha and vocals by Maria João and also costumes for the play “Chansons de Femmes” directed by Giorgio Corsetti.
- Distinguished with the award Look Elite for Best 1998 Collection.
- 2000 – In February presented their Autumn/Winter 2000/2001 Women’s Collection in New York within “Fashion Week-Seven on Six”.
- April, present their Autumn/Winter 2000/2001 within Moda Lisboa.
- September, present their Spring/Summer 2001 Women’s collection in New York.
- October, present Spring/Summer 2001 Women’s collection in Lisbon always within Moda Lisboa.
- 2001 – February, presented their Autumn/Winter 2001/2002 Women’s Collection in New York within “Fashion Week-Seven on Six”.
- Designed and produced the new uniforms for Vodafone for Spring/Summer and Autumn/Winter.
- March, present their Autumn/Winter 2001/2002 within Moda Lisboa.
- Develop the uniforms for the staff of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
- 2002 – March, presentation in Lisbon of both the women’s and the men’s Autumn/Winter 2002/2003 collections.
- Release of a ceramics line, for the national and international markets.
- Develop in partnership with the group Tempus a jewelry line for the brand Splend’Oro.
- Beginning of the project for the opening of the store Alves\Gonçalves in Chiado, store design by the architects Maria Grácio Nunes and FernandoSalvador.
- They’re invited to design the uniforms for the Lisbon City Hall employees.
- 2003 – March, Autumn Winter 2003/2004 collection presented in Moda Lisboa.
- April, Alves/Gonçalves Chiado store opens in Chiado Lisbon .
- October, Spring Summer 2004 collection presented in Moda Lisboa.
- 2004 – Updating of Vodafone uniforms for Autumn Winter 2004/2005.
- Presentation of the Autumn Winter 2004/05 collection in April and of the Spring Summer 2005 collection in October within Moda LisboaFashionWeek.
- Release of a stamp Alves/Gonçalves by the CTT Portugal.
